Object literature: The Neolithic Chinese carved jade, the primary hard stone of Chinese sculpture. Jade was prized for its hardness, durability, magical qualities and beauty. In particular, its subtle, translucent colours and protective qualities led to it becoming associated with Chinese conceptions of the soul and immortality. It is a symbol of good luck and is associated with various physical healing qualities.
Avalokiteshvara represents the Bodhisattva of Compassion in Buddhist religion. In this sculpture she appears with eleven heads and one thousand arms. Legend says that the goddess tried with all her force to help people, and because of these aspirations and impulses to help all sentient beings, Buddha Amitabha gave her eleven heads and thousands of hands to enable her to do this better.
