Gandhara Stucco of Prince Siddhartha - Ca. 300-500 AD

A great Gandharan Stucco of an elegant, youthful Buddha - also known as Siddhartha Gautama - who ultimately achieved Enlightenment and gave teachings upon which Buddhism was founded. The Buddha is depicted in a squatting position and his face is finely modelled with elegant features including heavy-lidded eyes, gently smiling closed lips, and stretched earlobes symbolising his rejection of the material world in pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. The surface on the back is flat, which indicates that the figure was attached to another surface, rather than being free standing.
