The Oi River marks the boundary between the provinces of Suruga and Totomi. There was no bridge in Hiroshige's day and, because of the dangerous current, people usually crossed the river on the shoulders of a wader or on a simple litter. The town of Kanaya is visible among the peaks the Kanayasaka in the distance. The sun setting behind the hills reddens the sky slightly.
Object Literature: Utagawa Hiroshige was born in Edo in 1797, his first name was Tokutaro. Hiroshige and Hokusai are generally regarded as the two leading landscape artists in Japanese printmaking.
